SUMMARY:Webinar on how to deal with gender-based violence: The potential role of Ombuds Offices in case handling
DESCRIPTION:In its series of online events for members and non-members and as part of its annual working program\, ENOHE is offering a special interactive (Q/A) webinar on gender-based violence and sexual harassment. \nThe issues are of increasing relevance in several working environments in higher education institutions (HEI’s). There are many different forms of explicit gender-based misbehaviors and/or violence and differences in how ombudspersons deal with them. They also arise from the fact that there are many different sexual orientations and identities\, such as lesbian\, gay\, genderqueer\, bisexual\, demi sexual\, transgender\, etc. Since the student (and staff) populations of HEI’s are very diverse\, so are the issues connected to the subject matter. \nMain aspects of personal identities such as ethnicity\, culture\, age\, education\, and socio-economic status have additional impacts on the professional as well as the interpersonal relationships between university members per se. Since HEI’s are hierarchical institutions\, with clear power structures and the potential for abuse of power\, this can also happen within professional relationships\, romantic relationships and through sexualized actions. \nA big EU-funded project\, the UniSAFE project\, aims to produce better knowledge on gender-based violence and to translate this knowledge into operational tools which will be presented during the webinar. Ombuds offices are delving into the broad topic of sexual misconduct in various ways. In its 2021 annual report the ombudsperson of Luxembourg University differentiates between sexual harassment\, sexual violence\, and sexual extortion. \nThe Office of the Independent Adjudicator in England & Wales delivered a Westminster Briefing on proactive approaches to tackling sexism on campus. Other Ombuds offices have contributed input into policy development at their institutions. \nThe aim of this webinar is to learn about different topic-related cases from daily practice\, then discuss and share effective means and methods for developing good practice-based handling of issues. \nWhat about keeping as much privacy as possible? \nAre any general policies in place and do they work in the individual case: and if not\, why not? \nWhat might be future obstacles and how can we find ways around them? \nParticipants in the webinar will hear and share ideas to think about when developing a policy\, and challenges/limitations related to what can be achieved within a university context. \nChairs:\nJosef Leidenfrost\, ENOHE President\, Welcome\nJean Grier\, ENOHE Vice President\, Chair and introduction \nModerator:\nMichaela Antonin Malanikova\, ENOHE Board Member\, Olomouc Palacky University\, Czech Republic \nOur speakers:\nMarcela Linkova\, Czech Academy of Sciences\, Prague\, Czech Republic\nBrent Epperson\, University of Luxembourg\, Luxembourg\nMartine Conway\, ENOHE Board Member\, University of Ottawa\, Canada\nJo Nuckley\, Office of the Independent Adjudicator\, Reading\, U.K.\nAlicia Sadiva Garduño\, Universidad Autonoma Metropolitana\, Ciudad de Mexico\, Mexico\nDiego Garcia Ricci\, Universidad Iberoamericana\, Ciudad de Mexico\, Mexico\nAlicia Llamas\, Universidad Iberoamericana\, Ciudad de Mexico\, Mexico \nFee\nParticipation for ENOHE members is free.\nParticipation for non-members costs € 50. \nSign up here:\nAs ENOHE member (if you have already paid your membership fee for 2023) you just fill out the registration form. \nAs non-member\, first you transfer € 50 by PayPal.\n(Please also add your full name and email address to the PayPal transfer.)\nThen you fill out the registration form. \nZoom link will be sent out to participants at least one week before the webinar.

SUMMARY:Webinar: How to set up an Ombuds office
DESCRIPTION:We invite you to participate in a conversation online organized by ENOHE\, the European Network of Ombuds in Higher Education (www.enohe.net) on 22 June 2021\, 1400 CET (-1600 CET)\, on how to set up ombuds offices within higher education institutions. \nThe 49 higher education ministers of the Council of Europe countries or their representatives have recently approved the Rome Communique of 19 November 2020. In their statement\, the ministers recognize the importance of safeguarding student rights through legislation. They committed themselves to developing and supporting in their respective national systems dedicated measures and structures\, such as student ombudspersons or similar solutions that already exist in many countries. They also committed themselves to enabling such arrangements within their countries and higher education systems and will encourage cooperation within the European Network of Ombuds in Higher Education (ENOHE). \nENOHE hence organizes and offers to the broader European higher education community a special webinar on the topic of how and why to create ombuds offices at higher education institutions. \nOur speakers are renowned experts in their fields: Tamta Demetrazde (Georgia)\, Helga Nolte (Germany)\, Brent Epperson (Luxembourg / Canada) and Tom Kosakowski (USA). \nThis webinar is a forum for everybody interested in or involved in the ombudsman idea. Participants are invited to share and compare their experiences. It is an opportunity to learn from our speakers and each other\, and network with and generate ideas from already practicing colleagues from countries in and beyond Europe. \nThe event will be recorded and made available via podcast afterwards. With your registration\, you agree to recording. A written publication within the series of “ENOHE Occasional Papers” is also planned. \nTechnical:\nLanguage: English\nRequired: Web access to Zoom 5.0 \nTo register\, please sign up here
