DESCRIPTION:ACCUO and ENOHE have co-organized a project to examine the book Tell Me Who You Are: Sharing Our Stories of Race\, Culture\, & Identity by Winona Guo and Priya Vulchi. \nThis book follows two American high school students who travel across the USA talking to people from various industries\, races\, and identities. They realised that throughout their high school experience they had not heard any meaningful discussions about racism. \n\nWe aim to create a low-barrier open forum to discuss the book\, its contents\, and the ways in which its ideas may inform our practice.\nThis inter-organizational collaboration provides an opportunity to build relationships and exchange ideas with colleagues across borders. This will also serve as a forum to compare what sort of conversations are happening about race and identity in North America\, Europe and beyond.\nOur plan is to meet early March\, and then again in late April\, so folks have an opportunity to engage in meaningful discussions around topics such as race\, identity\, intersectionality\, and strategies for effective change in your context.

SUMMARY:Webinar - Social Media\, Ombuds Offices and Confidentiality: Friends or Foes?
DESCRIPTION:Higher Education Ombuds Offices are low threshold institutions easily to be contacted by members of the academic community\, in most cases by students\, if they have issues or problems which they (think) they cannot address to any other internal facilities. \nFormal treatment of cases can be tedious and may not help in the individual situation\, which sometimes needs quick responses and/or reactions. In special situations\, cases might get out of hand\, if details are – on purpose – made public by complainants / visitors themselves either via social media or by launched press stories. \nSocial media per definition allow the creation or sharing / exchange of information\, ideas\, career interests\, and other forms of expression via virtual communities and networks\, but they can also transport fake news and misinformation. \nConfidentiality as one of the key features of the working principles of Ombuds Offices does require their employees to neither share information with third parties nor\, let alone\, contact the media directly. However\, what if YOU are contacted by the media\, probably because details on a case have already started circulating on the web? \nAnother side of social media is actually if\, and if so\, why Ombuds Offices are or are not using or should or should not use them. DESCRIPTION:We invite you to participate in a conversation online organized by ENOHE\, the European Network of Ombuds in Higher Education (www.enohe.net) on 22 June 2021\, 1400 CET (-1600 CET)\, on how to set up ombuds offices within higher education institutions. \nThe 49 higher education ministers of the Council of Europe countries or their representatives have recently approved the Rome Communique of 19 November 2020.  In their statement\, the ministers recognize the importance of safeguarding student rights through legislation. They committed themselves to developing and supporting in their respective national systems dedicated measures and structures\, such as student ombudspersons or similar solutions that already exist in many countries. They also committed themselves to enabling such arrangements within their countries and higher education systems and will encourage cooperation within the European Network of Ombuds in Higher Education (ENOHE). \nENOHE hence organizes and offers to the broader European higher education community a special webinar on the topic of how and why to create ombuds offices at higher education institutions.  \nOur speakers are renowned experts in their fields: Tamta Demetrazde (Georgia)\, Helga Nolte (Germany)\, Brent Epperson (Luxembourg / Canada) and Tom Kosakowski (USA). \nThis webinar is a forum for everybody interested in or involved in the ombudsman idea. Participants are invited to share and compare their experiences. It is an opportunity to learn from our speakers and each other\, and network with and generate ideas from already practicing colleagues from countries in and beyond Europe. \nThe event will be recorded and made available via podcast afterwards.
